Unfortunately, I have to take issue with much of this article, Linda. As a former employee of Dick Smith Electronics (when Dick himself owned it and had his office above mine in Carlotta St Artarmon), the staff these days are "box movers", as is the company.
Used to be that you had to have qualifications or a hobby interest in electronics to get a job with DSE - and you used to sell REAL electronic components (resistors, capacitors, ICs, components of every kind), as well as ham radio gear.
Now you'd be hard-pressed to find a staff member who knows what any of those components are - they're just interested in flogging "consumer electronics". Calling themselves "The Techsperts" is offensive to those of us who love electronics. And don't get me started on their complete and utter lack of customer service skills.
Gary Johnson, the former Mail Order Manager, had the right idea when he started Jaycar - THAT is where the "techsperts" are these days, not DSE.
Were Dick dead, you'd be able to use him as an exhaust fan now.
P erfect comment Jon. Well written and a total "bullseye" DSE is dying a stupid indifferent death and the mere use of the title "Dick Smith" does a huge injustice to the former company and man himself.
BTW. DSE have released their google app. It fails and crashes with virtually every button-press or keystroke. Utter failure!
Unfortunately, I kinda of agree with Mr Jon Biddell above. I have recently bought a laptop from DSE and despite paying extra for a warranty from DSE they told me that I only had 2 weeks to get a replacement for my faulty laptop. I took two weeks and one day............I spent 2.5 days on the phone to microsoft, who was more than happy to help, I spoke to DSE head office who didnt care, I argued with the local store at Wynnum and all I got was abuse from their staff telling me how hard it was for them and how THEY were doing me a favour when I received my second laptop....."BUT".....and the programs I paid for didnt work...So I rang again!! I got told that this must be a microsoft issue and that this wasn't their (DSE) problem. I spoke with a DSE Customer Service Manager who did nothing, I spoke with the Store Manager who acted like a child and once again after spending my own money speaking to Microsoft who have stated they will/and have/ fully reimbursed me with the phone costs, corrected the issue, which was, When you "Sell" a microsoft product there is "One" product key only. This means when I bought the original laptop, all programs I bought at the same time needed to be replaced.....by DSE but were not as they had no idea. I didn't buy a laptop as an experienced user, but I had some expectation that the DSE staff knew what they were talking about.The staff that served me had no idea what they were doing or what they were talking about, I found this out after asking with other students at UQ where I study. I find it ironic that a laymen would ask for assistance from a previously experienced retailer like DSE only to be told we "Dont Know" or we "Don't Care". How things have gone down hill!.
